The Reprint Everyone Is Trading and Nobody Confirmed

This is the first Radar Watch, and it does a different job from the Thursday column. That one tells you what already moved. This one runs off a tracker we built for ourselves: a daily snapshot of TCGplayer prices across 2,966 modern products, plus a sweep of three Pokemon subreddits and four of the larger YouTube channels. It took its first snapshot this week, so the half that matters most, catching a card whose attention climbs while its price sits still, does not work yet. You cannot measure a price change with one price. Here is what the first week produced anyway, gaps left visible.

A reprint nobody has confirmed

Of the 351 Reddit posts the sweep pulled on August 8, the loudest thread was not about a card. It was about boxes. One post asks what everyone's buy in price is on Destined Rivals boxes and opens with the reprint looming and prices dropping. Another asks whether a booster box reprint will drag PSA 10 slab prices with it. A third is someone deciding whether to sell their Unova Heavy Hitters because they keep seeing other sets get reprinted. You can watch the price get talked down in real time: one poster is eyeing boxes "around 380ish all in" and waiting a week or two to see where they settle.

Here is what is actually confirmed. We opened Pokemon's own Destined Rivals expansion page today. It reads "Available Now!", lists five product types, and says nothing about a reprint, a restock, or a print run. The most detailed public account of the reprint, published August 7, says boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes should begin arriving near the end of August. That same article states in its own text that the figures are not confirmed by the Pokemon Company and should be treated as industry estimates, and credits them to market commentators rather than to any announcement.

That hedge is the story. Strip it off and you have invented a fact. So in our catalyst file the set is logged as in print, with a reprint flag raised and explicitly marked unconfirmed.

What we can verify is today's price, from two sources that have no idea the other exists:

Both pulled August 8, roughly 1% apart. What we cannot tell you is what those numbers were seven days ago, because our history starts now. The claim that boxes once traded past $600 comes from the same unconfirmed article, so we are not going to hand it back to you as though we measured it.

A restock is not the same animal as an anniversary reprint

We worked through a version of this in July when we asked whether reprints hurt the original card, and the answer there was mostly no. But that post was about 30th Celebration, out September 16, which reprints Base Set Charizard as a clearly marked separate card carrying its own set stamp. Two cards, two supplies, two prices, and the 1999 original goes on being a 1999 original.

A restock does not work that way. Nothing new gets created. The same Destined Rivals boxes get printed again, holding the same #231, and there is nothing for the market to tell apart. So the comforting finding from that post does not transfer. If cheaper boxes arrive and people open them, more Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex enters the market, identical in every respect to the ones already here.

That makes the set's chase card the clean test. Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex, Destined Rivals #231/182, as of August 8:

Three sources, one card, no meaningful disagreement. The graded ladder is worth a glance while we are here: a Grade 9 at $534 against a $517 raw is a wash once you pay grading and selling fees, so the entire submission case is the 10 at roughly 2.2x raw, which is a thin multiple by the standards of this hobby.

Our call is that the raw is lower on October 15 than the $517.26 we logged today. We are not naming a floor, and that is deliberate. We named a $110 floor on N's Zekrom and it slid underneath on nothing but fading attention. We named a $90 to $110 landing zone on Pikachu & Zekrom GX after the anniversary reveal and it went straight through to $50. Direction is the part we can defend on a supply event. The specific number is the part that keeps embarrassing us.

The cheapest Destined Rivals booster box is not a Destined Rivals booster box

Running the liquidity check on sealed turned up something worth knowing if you ever shop by lowest price.

The English Destined Rivals Booster Box page has 83 live listings. Sorted cheapest first, it opens at $41.93, and that listing is a Chinese Glory of Team Rocket slim box. Under $80 you get more Chinese boxes, a run of Korean ones, and bundles of 36 loose packs in a plastic protector rather than a sealed box. Genuine sealed English boxes start around $415.

Pitch Black is worse. Its Elite Trainer Box page opens at $1 for "Darkrai coin and dice" and $3 for a Zarude promo, pieces somebody pulled out of an Elite Trainer Box and listed against the box's own product page. Real Pitch Black Elite Trainer Boxes begin around $76, against a $72.66 aggregate market price.

This is the trap we described when separating real arbitrage from mirages, except the mirage is not a stale comp this time. It is a different product wearing the right product's page. The practical version: on sealed, the aggregate market price is the number and the lowest listing is close to meaningless.

Singles have the same problem under a different name. Search our snapshot for "Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex" and five products come back, from a $20.78 printing up through an Ascended Heroes version at $383.97 to the $517.26 illustration rare. All five are honestly named Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex. One of them is the card anybody means.

What ran without us

Nothing, which is the honest answer. On Thursday the hot card column flagged Primal Kyogre-EX and a $1 Metang, both found through outside sources. The radar could not have surfaced either. It had no price history on August 6, and Ancient Origins is a 2015 set, outside the 2022 and newer window it snapshots at all. Worth writing down, so that in a month we can check whether the tracker started earning its keep or just agreed with things we already knew.

Zero candidates, on purpose

A card reaches our candidate list only after clearing five checks: unambiguous identity down to the collector number, live listings you could actually buy today, a snapshot price with the source attached, evidence behind any print status claim, and proof it has not already run. That last check needs a seven day price change, and we have one day of history. Anything published today as a candidate would be an attention list in a costume.

Something else surfaced while we were checking. Our liquidity gate had been asking TCGplayer's search endpoint for listings, and that endpoint hands back a preview of about three listings per product no matter what you request. Every product came back with exactly three, so the gate had never rejected anything in its life. It is pointed at the real listings endpoint now, and the card that reported three listings reports 83. A gate that always passes is worse than no gate, and you only catch it by asking why every number is identical.

So, no buys this week. One bearish flag on Destined Rivals sealed, one watch call on its chase single, and a Prismatic Evolutions reprint rumor logged as unknown because we could not find a page that settled it. The tracker surfaces things worth watching and nothing more. It is not financial advice, and this week it is mostly an honest list of what we cannot see yet.

Next Saturday the history is eight days deep, the first point where any of this becomes a divergence read instead of a summary of what people were talking about.
